The new National Stadium was built in 2009 to replace the old stadium (Chao Anuwong National Stadium), with a capacity of 25,000 seats, more than 5,000 seats, built to be the main arena for the 2009 SEA Games in Vientiane, Laos. Lao government owned
The reason for using the name 'Major 16' is because this field is 16 kilometers away from the city (main center) of Vientiane.
Laos used this arena to hit players in the 2018 AFF Suzuki Cup, both of which are home games. Which they lost to Vietnam 0-3 and Myanmar 1-3
